With Fallout 4 now a few years old, fans are eagerly awaiting the release of a new entry in the acclaimed post-apocalyptic roleplaying series. Bethesda has confirmed the game will happen, but they aren’t revealing much about it. Thankfully, a few morsels of information have trickled out and we’ve put together this article to share all the Fallout 5: everything we know so far that we know about the upcoming game.
Bethesda has only just started to dig into the development of a Fallout 5. During an interview with IGN following Starfield’s gameplay reveal, Todd Howard said the company only had a “one-pager” on the project. This is essentially a high-level outline of the game’s concept, which gives developers a good idea of where they want to take it and what they’ll need to get there. It’s similar to the way that businesses might present an elevator pitch to executives.
As a result, it’s unlikely that fans will get to see anything more than this at this point. It’s also a bit of a long shot that the studio will release any sort of trailer for Fallout 5, especially with its current focus on promoting Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6.
That said, this isn’t the first time the developer has talked about the next game in the series. In a separate interview with IGN last year, Howard said the team had a “rough idea” of what Fallout 5 would look like.
When will Fallout 5 release?
While Fallout 76 has been a resounding success for the franchise, it’s hard to imagine that the team will want to return to the same online multiplayer experience for the fifth game in the series. It’s more likely that the studio will go back to a single-player experience that’s played offline, especially given how rocky online multiplayer has been in the previous game in the series, Fallout 76.
Another thing that’s unclear at this point is what type of console the game will be released on. With the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S set to be replaced by Microsoft’s new 2024 consoles, it’s possible that a Fallout 5 would only launch on those platforms. However, that’s not necessarily guaranteed since Sony is expected to release a new PlayStation around the same time.
It’s also worth noting that the game isn’t even in development at this point, so it could be a while before we actually get to play it. With Bethesda still putting the finishing touches on Starfield and then pivoting to The Elder Scrolls 6, it’s unlikely that Fallout 5 will release until at least 2023. That’s a long wait for fans. Let’s hope the developer can pull it off in the end.
